Downton Abbey and Land Girls

My birthday recently passed, and my BIL and SIL sent me a gift certificate to the Canadian big chain bookstore.  Of course I was delighted!  One would expect me to spend it on books, and I was tempted.

I'm not a big TV watcher, due to the lack of time more than anything.  Not to mention, there's nothing I really want to watch.  I recently discovered two UK shows and really, really wanted to watch them.  Downton Abbey has made a big splash and I see fans all over the web.  I did manage to catch part of an episode one night, but I'm not sure if it's shown regularly in Canada, or what station I even watched it on!  Plus, it was a season two episode, so I was lost.  For those of you not familiar, this show is based upon a family and its servants, early 1900s, England.

Another show I've been really wanting to check out is Land Girls.  This takes place during WWII and follows the lives of women who are part of the Woman's Land Army (women went to work in agriculture, replacing the men who went off to war) in England.  WWII is a very fascinating period for me, as I do read a lot of novels set in this time period.

So, instead of buying books, I bought the first seasons of both shows.  I'm very excited!  I really, really wish the US would come out with period dramas.  The CSIs and the cop/crime investigative shows really need to start petering out.  If the US and Canada started to produce shows like this, maybe they'd woo some viewers back.

Are any of you fans of either show?  Can any of you in the UK recommend other shows such as these?

Happy belated birthday! I'm not familiar with the second one but I absolutely adore Downton Abbey! :) Hm, I don't know - I think DA is the most well-known UK period drama out there at the moment but I'll let you know if I remember a good one. :) You can still check out The Tudors or Agatha Christie's Poirot / Miss Marple, I love these too.

Thanks, ladies!

@Vicky, I've been wanting to watch DA for awhile now. I was searching for it on Amazon when I found Land Girls. I'm not sure if the Tudors is still playing here in Canada, but I know Camelot is (I think this has Joseph Fiennes in it). I'll admit that I'm a fan of Coronation Street. I actually watched it while I was a visitor in England and then found out they show it here in Canada!

@Melissa--Thank you for stopping by! I know DA is shown on PBS back home in the US. Not sure if Land Girls will be seen there. Your little girl is beautiful. My little girl is almost two. And while you have a big gap between your kids, I have 13 1/2 months. My son is 10 months.

I loved the first season of Downton Abbey! The second season doesn't show here in the US until January (I believe) so I'm trying to wait patiently for it. :)

Hope you had a great birthday!

Sorry, I can comment on either show, but it looks like you may have a penchant for period pieces, so I'll definitely keep you in mind for a reviewer copy of my next story, set in WWI...

Also, if you're interested in reviewing a WWII short story that's now available on Amazon UK, please let me know!

Best regards,
Edward

I am a HUGE fan of Downton Abbey!!! I just love it so much!!! And i'm so happy that there would be a Christmas episode too! It's sad it doesn't have more than 10 episodes.

Don't the other show though.

Anyway, i hope you enjoy both of them! And Happy Birthday!
